The municipal council voted to rezone two Park Street parcels on Aug. 26 to align zoning with current and planned uses. The council approved changing 16 Park Street, the parcel with an existing storage facility, from office to business, and approved changing 17 Park Street, a vacant parcel, from office to urban residential.
Petitioners and their engineer explained that 16 Park Street was the subject of a prior environmental cleanup for the storage facility and is recorded under an Activity and Use Limitation (AUL) that applies to that parcel. Petitioners said they intend to explore townhouse‑style residential development on the adjacent site at 17 Park Street if rezoning allows it; the planning board and city planner recommended the changes as consistent with the master plan’s phase‑out of the office district in those areas.
Councilors approved both map changes after planning‑department sign‑off and public notice; no development plan was filed at the hearing. City staff noted that any future development proposals would be reviewed under planning board special‑permit and site plan processes and would be subject to appropriate DEP or environmental oversight if new work required further remediation.
