The Methuen City Council unanimously approved a slate of promotions within the Methuen Fire Department, moving several long-tenured members into supervisory positions.
Chief Toto presented candidates and summarized their experience. Captain Jeff Slattery, a 27-year member with fire-prevention credentials, was recommended for the budgeted Deputy Chief position and was approved unanimously. Lieutenant Richard Talbot (22 years) and Lieutenant Susan Valera (21 years) were each promoted to captain. Cooper Brown and John Blaze were promoted to lieutenant. Each nomination was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. Several promoted members thanked the council, the chief and their families.
These were budgeted promotions and staff said no bypass of the promotional list occurred. Council recessed briefly for photos after the votes.
