Board meeting highlights: DECA students, retirees and student leadership honored

The Toledo City School District board used the opening portion of its May 27 meeting to spotlight student achievement and recognize long‑serving staff.
Miss Mather introduced DECA students Alicia Eddington and Tavon Morrell, who advanced from regional to state competitions and were selected to represent the district at an international DECA event. "They were then chosen to represent TPS at the international competition," Miss Mather said. The board and attendees applauded the students and took photos.
The board also recognized longtime athletics reporter Steve Junda for decades covering local school sports and Burton "Bert" Rogers for his career as an athletic trainer with TPS. Trustees recounted personal memories and thanked them for their contributions to school athletics and student life.
Retiree recognitions named individual staff and their service lengths — for example, Rebecca Breaker (accounting specialist, 25 years, 10 months), Cynthia Bunn (bus driver, 30 years, 9 months), Pam Fleck (director of testing, 33 years), and Willie Ward (principal, 35 years) — and the board noted a combined total of 295 years and 7 months of service to the district.
Student representative Tyrese Blue introduced himself and noted more than 60 college credits earned while in high school and his upcoming Midwest representation for the Boys & Girls Club. Parent representative Tamika Harris updated the board on outreach and clinic access for families and called attention to House Bill 250, which she said requires districts to adopt cell‑phone policies for students.
The board's recognitions preceded the business portion of the meeting and set a celebratory tone before the evening's financial and policy discussions.
