LaPorte County parks board approves routine items, welcomes new member

The LaPorte County Parks and Recreation Board on June 3 approved its agenda, the minutes from the previous meeting and the monthly financial report and moved to review committee duties and meeting operating rules ahead of the next meeting.

The board voted unanimously by voice to accept the agenda and approve the minutes and financial report. Unidentified Speaker 2 opened the meeting and led routine approval motions; Unidentified Speaker 4 moved to accept the agenda and Unidentified Speaker 3 seconded. Unidentified Speaker 4 then moved to approve the financial report and Unidentified Speaker 3 seconded.

Why it matters: the board’s approvals keep routine operations and procurement on schedule and the referral of duties and operating rules to the rules committee signals an administrative review meant to clarify responsibilities and meeting procedures.

The board also received a personnel update. Jeremy (Unidentified Speaker 4) introduced a new board member, Jesse Davenport, who said, “My name is Jesse Davenport... I’m the ag and natural resources educator for Purdue Extension,” and that he previously taught agricultural courses at La Porte High School. The board assigned Davenport to the budget and personnel committees.

Board members praised clearer financial reports, including color-coding that one member said "makes it so much easier" to scan. The board heard no public comments during the public-comment portion of the meeting.

On governance matters the board approved a motion to address committee duties at the next meeting and separately voted to send proposed meeting operating rules and responsibilities to the rules committee for review, both by voice vote. The rules are a redlined update to a 2006 version and, if the rules committee recommends changes, the full board will consider them at a future meeting.

The board adjourned and scheduled its next meeting for Aug. 5 at Lure County Park’s Morgan Shelter.
