Miss Barnes said the resolution will help “save lives,” and cited concerns about higher suicide risk for LGBTQ+ students, particularly youth of color. "No one chooses to be gay. No one chooses to be trans," Barnes said during discussion, arguing the board must make schools safe and affirming.
Board members offered public statements backing the resolution. One member said the board must make "student-centered decisions," adding: "If we honestly believe that, we're for all students and providing them the education they deserve." Another, Bishop Parker, thanked Barnes for bringing the item forward and said the district’s leadership matters to the community.
The vote: Treasurer conducted a roll call. Parker, Gerken, Barwick, Vasquez and Barnes recorded “Yes.” The resolution took effect immediately upon adoption, per the text read aloud.
Procedure and scope: the resolution reaffirms district policy and specifies participation in related activities remains voluntary and must follow district procedures. The motion was presented and seconded on the floor; the board recorded a unanimous vote.
