The Huntington Woods City Commission on March 18 authorized the city manager to execute a guaranteed energy services agreement with Verity Services following staff presentations and a brief public comment period.
City staff said the project has been under consideration for roughly three years and presented projected financial and environmental benefits. The administration reported that implementing the improvements would return about $1,800,000 to the city over the 20-year contract life and estimated annual CO2 savings of 279.3 tons, which staff framed as the equivalent of planting about 4,600 trees annually. The commission also discussed financing, and staff said they had locked in a competitive rate with Bank of America while continuing to solicit other bids.
A member of the public questioned the proposal's scope and recommended the city consider additional measures such as batteries, microgrids, heat pumps, geothermal and partnership opportunities to advance a carbon-neutral objective, while also asking for clearer metrics showing the proposal's reduction relative to the city's total emissions.
After discussion, a commissioner moved to approve the agreement with Verity Services and the motion carried.
What happens next: The city manager was authorized to execute the contract and staff will report on implementation and measurement cadence; commissioners asked for continued performance verification beyond the contract's initial guarantee period.
