Council boosts building-maintenance funding after director warns repairs exceed estimates

Council members on Sept. 22 flagged building maintenance as underbudgeted after the department’s interim director described a chaotic handoff, unpaid bills from earlier in the year and multiple air handlers needing attention.
Angie, who joined the workshop after the meeting began, said the department had been handed a disorganized set of records and that she did not yet have firm quotes for some repairs: "I don't have an answer for you," she said, noting multiple outstanding invoices from earlier months. Members repeatedly said the amounts currently in the twos and threes would not cover emergency repairs.
Mister Kiel moved to increase the electric line-item to $1.3 million and add $100,000 to the repairs-to-buildings account, and he urged the building-maintenance department to prepare a capital-projects plan. Council members also agreed to reallocate a $610 blueprinting line to cover a mobile-phone request to keep tracking consistent in next year’s pipeline.
The council approved the motion with recorded ayes. Members tasked staff to produce clearer estimates for the next meeting and to bring a prioritized capital plan so the council can determine how to pay for larger repairs beyond the amended amounts.
The council emphasized that the approved increases will not fully cover all expected work and that further adjustments are likely when detailed quotes are submitted.
