An ongoing LaPorte County budget workshop approved the bulk of departmental line-item budgets known as 'twos and threes' on Sept. 22, with the council amending one office-supplies request and leaving several personnel (100) accounts for a later meeting.
Unidentified Speaker, who reopened the workshop, said the evening’s purpose was to “finalize the auditors, surveyors, building maintenance, board of commissioners” and continue work on 100 accounts. After discussion, Mister Novak moved to approve the twos and threes as presented with an amendment to reduce the office-supplies allocation; Mister Yugelski seconded the motion. The council amended the motion again to set the office-supplies amount to $0 while retaining dues and professional services. The motion carried with ayes and at least one recorded opposing voice.
The council separately approved an auditors’ ineligible-deductions package (location 3352) for the auditors’ 200s accounts and moved to hold surveyor items since the surveyor was not present. Members also approved twos and threes for the board of commissioners after clarifying that health-insurance and payroll withholding estimates remain subject to further amendment once final insurance numbers are available.
Council members repeatedly cautioned that several estimates—including health insurance and payroll withholdings—are incomplete and will be adjusted before the final budget. The chair said remaining action items include the 100 accounts and general raises, which will be discussed at follow-up sessions.
The council recessed to continue a separate regular meeting after setting dates to resume budget discussions.
