The LaPorte County Drainage Board approved a perimeter-drain easement for a proposed septic system after staff described the easement would be limited to perimeter drain water only. The motion was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Separately, members discussed ongoing issues with beaver dams and reported outreach to a trapper (Sam Martin) for a quote; members noted Michigan jurisdictions sometimes remove beavers as nuisance animals rather than trap and agreed to list beaver-dam removal on the next meeting agenda for follow-up. Board members agreed to inspect specific ditch reaches before authorizing work that could damage crops.
On vegetation control, the board discussed using a drone contractor for targeted herbicide applications. Members described access challenges because of crops and the season and indicated they would pay contractors proportionally for acreage actually treated. The board moved and approved directing contractors to perform work only where they can access the ditches without damaging crops and to adjust payment to match completed work.
The board also received an update that the Eckerditch structure repairs are incomplete and further excavation risks damaging crops, so the board will monitor repairs and await parts or additional work.
