Parks staff authorized to seek Health Foundation grant to upgrade disc-golf course

LaPorte County parks staff received board approval Sept. 2 to pursue a Health Foundation grant to upgrade the park’s disc-golf course. Board members moved, seconded and approved a motion allowing staff to seek funding for the project.
Staff (Jeremy) presented a project estimate with an approximate total of $25,000 in materials and volunteer labor. Line-item estimates discussed at the meeting included signage at approximately $2,500 and tree clearance of roughly $4,500; staff said they could install pervious-style tee pads for about $9,000 in materials and anticipated reusing existing baskets where possible while buying some new baskets. Staff emphasized using in-house crews and volunteer labor to reduce costs.
Staff said upgrading the course would likely increase tournament play and visitation; they cited an estimate that 50 to 70 players attend tournaments periodically and suggested a well-maintained course could attract more visitors and weekend stays in nearby towns.
The board voted to let staff apply for a Health Foundation (HFL) grant in the $10,000–$25,000 range and to contribute in-kind labor and some local funding if the grant is awarded. The motion passed by voice vote. Staff will pursue the grant application and return to the board with application results and any required local-match commitments.
