Commissioners authorize immediate repairs for leaking jail showers and ask council for additional funds

LaPorte County commissioners on Sept. 3 authorized immediate repairs to additional leaking shower lines discovered above the county jail’s gas line and moved to seek further appropriation from the county council to cover the remaining work.
Staff reported that opening the gas line revealed four sets of leaking showers rather than the two originally approved for repair. Commissioners agreed that repairing lower showers without fixing the upper sets would be ineffective because water would continue to drip; they therefore authorized repairs to the newly discovered upper-floor cells immediately using already appropriated funds for related work.
The board made a second motion directing staff to approach the county council for additional appropriation to cover repairs to the remaining blocks (the transcript references S2/S3 and S6/S7 areas by staff notation). Commissioners thanked the sheriff’s department and jail staff for coping with logistics and praised the coordination required to move detainees during repairs.
