The LaPorte County Parks and Recreation Board voted on Sept. 2 to approve demolition of a deteriorated caretaker house on park property, after staff and board members said the structure has limited reuse potential and would be costly to restore.
Staff reported that they inspected the building, consulted county commissioners and received what staff described as the commissioners’ blessing to remove the structure. The highway department offered to bring equipment to assist with the demolition, and staff said park crew members could salvage reusable scrap material.
Staff provided preliminary cost information: dumpster rental estimates and a staff estimate that demolition with highway-department assistance would cost under $3,000 to $4,000. The board voted to proceed; the motion to demolish was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Board members described the removal as an efficiency and safety measure: consolidating staff workspaces and equipment storage at a central location and removing a building they said would require substantial investment to be rentable or reusable.
No demolition schedule was set at the meeting. Staff said they would coordinate with the highway department and report back on timing and exact costs.
