After compliance sale to a minor, Burke Liquors receives one-year renewal from LaPorte County board

The LaPorte County Alcoholic Beverage Commission granted a one-year renewal to Burke Liquors (permit DL4632212) after reviewing a December compliance check in which a clerk sold alcohol to a minor without properly checking identification.
General manager Gracias Sabalsa described the incident to the board, saying the clerk had been fired and the store paid a $250 fine. "We fired him because he he was lately, you know, he was having personal problems and he was not putting attention in anything in the store," Sabalsa said. He explained the store maintains employee-permit copies on a board in the office and said the clerk failed to follow the shop's ID-check routine.
Board members questioned whether the store uses electronic scanning or other systems to reduce human error; Sabalsa said the store does not currently have ID-scanning software but could request installation from the owner. The board discussed that automatic ID-scanning could reduce mistakes and relieve staff of guessing ages at the register.
After discussion, a motion for a one-year renewal following the violation was moved and seconded; the motion passed by voice vote.
The commission recorded the renewal and closed the matter on the record, with the understanding the business had remedied the immediate staffing problem and paid the civil fine.
