The LaPorte County Soil and Water Conservation District board met Aug. 5 and approved routine business including the June meeting minutes, the treasury report and the month’s claims. District staff reported operating expenses for the month totaled $19,645.07.
District staff said a new employee will start on the 18th and noted the district received the first 50% of a clean water grant up front. Staff warned that each reimbursement request for the grant will trigger an additional report, and asked the board to limit frequent reimbursement submissions to reduce repeated reporting obligations.
Board members discussed project work across roughly 50.375 acres, including an 8.5-acre understory restoration planned with Friendship Botanic Gardens. The board heard that Hitachi has agreed to match the district’s clean-water grant funding, a contribution described by a board member as doubling the district’s funds.
On procedural items, a board member moved and a colleague seconded approval of the minutes, and separate motions to accept the treasury report and the monthly claims were seconded and approved by voice vote. The district’s next regular meeting was set for Sept. 9.
The district also heard announcements about community outreach and upcoming events including a pesticide collection on Aug. 12 and a Penny Purdue field day on Aug. 20. Staff reported plat book photos are expected by Sept. 1 with a release likely in October.
The meeting adjourned after the scheduled business.
