Board recognizes National Recovery Month, Prostate Cancer Awareness and service clubs; highlights local resources

At the start of the Sept. 9 meeting, the Orange County Board of Supervisors paused formal business to recognize a series of community awareness observances.
Chair Doug Chaffee opened the presentations on National Recovery Month, saying the county "signals Orange County's unwavering support for individuals and families living or being impacted by substance use disorders." Health Care Agency speakers highlighted treatment options, local resources and the importance of reducing stigma. A presenter closed by saying, "The opposite of addiction is not sobriety. It is connection," and the board cited OC Links ((855) 625-4657) and the OC Navigator website (ocnavigator.org) as local points of contact for help.
The board also observed Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Chair Chaffee discussed his own successful radiation treatment and urged early detection, noting the high survivorship rates with early diagnosis. A urologist on the dais encouraged men to discuss screening options with their physicians and described PSA testing as an available screening tool.
Supervisor Janet Wynne and colleagues recognized service clubs in Orange County — including Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions and Elks — praising their volunteer work supporting youth, veterans and community needs. Representatives from several clubs came forward to be recognized.
The board invited residents to use posted resource tables in the lobby for naloxone and recovery information and encouraged community partners to continue outreach work.
