The Colony City Council authorized the city manager to submit an application to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) for a local park grant to redevelop the BBO Sports Complex.
Staff told council members the city has already allocated $750,000 in the budget intended to serve as the required match for the TPWD grant. The presentation noted a project line with roughly $1.7 million to $1.8 million in available funds to support the redevelopment work, and referenced prior successful grant management by the contractor (MHS) that managed the West Shore grant award.
Council discussed project scope: staff described a concept that retains the north field as a softball field, reduces soil depth and replaces soil and irrigation, adds new fencing and shade canopies, installs benches and ADA-compliant features, and converts a south field to a multipurpose surface usable for softball, baseball, flag football, kickball and other activities. Staff confirmed the existing pond on the site will be retained.
Important timelines were stated: Aug. 1 is the TPWD application deadline and grant awards are expected in January. Councilmembers asked about previous award amounts (the West Shore award was discussed at about $400,000) and about management fees; staff said TPWD has a competitive relationship with experienced grant managers and that the city feels the application is competitive.
The council moved, seconded and voted to authorize the application and supporting resolution; the motion passed.
