Teachers and school staff asked the board to approve a McDowell Mountain Elementary activity supported by a $10,000 donation from the Mayo Clinic. Teacher Lauren Butler outlined three events: an education day at the school with medical volunteers, a Shop with a Doc shopping event (Jan. 9) providing $100 to each of 25 students, and a potential May field trip to Mayo Clinic for fifth graders.
Butler said Mayo Clinic’s gift will cover the $2,500 budget for the Shop with a Doc participant stipends, busing for field trips, gift bags and other event costs; the remainder will be used for health-related equipment or programming consistent with the donor’s intent. "They are donating $10,000 to us, which is amazing," Butler said. Staff described selection criteria for the Shop with a Doc participants that prioritize free-and-reduced-lunch lists and teacher nominations to reach students with greatest need. The district will use opt-out parental consent forms and encourage parent volunteers for the on-campus education event.
Board members voiced general support for the program and asked staff to be mindful of student privacy and public imagery; they then moved and approved the activity and use of funds.
Next step: staff will finalize participant selection and opt-out forms and schedule the event logistics with transportation and volunteer coordination.
