Board backs elementary enrichment pilot and agrees to study future uses for 4 Peaks facility

The Fountain Hills Unified School board discussed two linked items: expanding enrichment opportunities for elementary students and longer-term planning for the 4 Peaks facility and two vacant lots that are in the process of sale approvals.

Club policy: trustees clarified that a prior policy change limited student-led clubs to grades 6–12 and that elementary activities should be framed as ‘‘enrichment’’ programs with parameters (background checks, principal approval, fee structures to avoid gifts of public funds and facility-use agreements). Board members and community volunteers described proposed 10–12 week offerings (music club, Spanish, athletics). Trustees directed sponsors to coordinate with the principal (Bridal) and the district’s facilities/attorney to finalize proposals and contracts.

Facilities and 4 Peaks: trustees discussed the 4 Peaks facility’s deferred maintenance, zoning limitations and prior reuse attempts. Options raised included leaving the site as open space, repurposing it for recreation (pickleball, natatorium/pool) or housing, and land-lease or exchange to secure alternative facilities. The board agreed to bring a board-directed, public committee forward to study options and return recommendations.

Next steps: Madison (board member) will coordinate proposals for elementary enrichment offerings and bring materials to district staff and the board for approval; staff will confirm facility-use review processes and attorney sign-off prior to any outside group using district space.
