The Fountain Hills Unified School District board approved a new instructional time model intended to reduce the number of students enrolled in the district—s online program for general purposes.
Superintendent Dr. Jay said the district plans to reserve the online school primarily for students who need alternative placement, are long-term suspended, or have medical or other documented reasons that prevent on-campus attendance. "We do not plan to offer any K-5 online," he said, arguing younger students benefit from in-person instruction.
Under the approved model, students enrolled in the virtual academy would be assigned to their home school for enrollment purposes, with principals able to allow a student to work virtually from home after parent and administrative approval. Dr. Jay said time-tracking and course schedules will be required for virtual students and that the district will present a recommended software platform in the first August meeting; he mentioned Edgenuity as a possible vendor under review.
Board members asked questions about schedule details and a typographical inconsistency in the packet concerning elementary lunch/recess minutes; staff said they would correct the packet language prior to formal adoption of any schedule changes.
The motion to approve the instructional time model passed by voice vote. District staff will return in August with specifics about the online platform and implementation details.
