Board signs cybersecurity expansion with Fruth Group, fields questions on PowerSchool payments after breach

Administration said the added cybersecurity coverage was necessary to meet the district trust’s requirements and to strengthen the district’s defenses following the PowerSchool incident. The Fruth Group renewal reflects a multi-year RFP process approved earlier; the vendor will provide on-site support, asset tagging and enhanced cyber protections, administration said.
During accounts payable review, board member Madison flagged three recent PowerSchool payments (dated 07/09, 07/16 and 07/31) totaling roughly $60,000 in a one-month span and said, “So that’s 1 month, and it's $60,000 to PowerSchool who just had a breach. So I to me, that's a huge no.” Administration responded that the line items were renewals and that a committee will evaluate whether to replace the district’s student information system, but that a multi-month replacement would take six to nine months.
Board members also asked for breakdowns of other vendor charges (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt workbooks; payments to a transportation consultant, John Flynn) and requested staff provide itemized justifications. Administration said they would circulate a detailed cost breakdown and timelines for potential SIS replacement decisions.
The board approved the Fruth Group renewal by voice vote, and directed staff to provide the requested vendor-cost breakdowns and committee timeline for deciding whether to continue with or replace PowerSchool.
