Van Buren County OKs resolution to join Purdue opioid settlement and establish abatement fund

The Van Buren County Board of Supervisors on a voice vote approved a resolution authorizing the county auditor to sign participation and release documents for the Purdue Direct Settlement, part of the national opioid litigation settlement framework. County staff said the county is a non‑litigating jurisdiction but may sign the state’s documents to receive local government (LG) abatement shares and the board ratified that decision (SEG 1855–2112).
The auditor and staff described the settlements’ background: several manufacturers, distributors and pharmacies reached agreements beginning in 2021 and subsequent settlements increased the number of participating defendants. Supervisors were told earlier settlements produced larger payments to litigating counties; Van Buren County’s allotment has totaled about $70,000 since the program’s start (staff remarks summarized at SEG 1931–1936 and SEG 1962–1969). Staff emphasized statutory and settlement restrictions on allowable expenditures: the county must deposit receipts into a designated LG abatement fund and spend funds in line with the settlement’s “core strategies.”
Supporters said the county has already used opioid‑related funds for prevention work, including locking pill bottles, billboard campaigns and sheriff’s office initiatives, and a Safe Coalition has assisted in grant administration (SEG 1990–2001, SEG 2018–2021). The board adopted the resolution to participate and directed the auditor to execute any ancillary documents needed to effectuate the county’s participation (SEG 2085–2090, SEG 2108–2112).
The resolution requires the county to deposit any LG abatement shares into the new abatement fund and ratifies prior actions taken by officers related to the settlement. The board’s action does not change the amount the county will receive; it formalizes county acceptance of the settlement terms and constrains use to the project categories allowed by the agreement. The board signaled hope that additional statewide settlements will consolidate more funds in the near term and staff said they will seek to coordinate receipt of further distributions.
