Conservation Board reports steady visitation, $30,000 in grants and new projects at county parks

The Louisa County Conservation Board presented its annual report to commissioners, summarizing park maintenance, public programming, revenue and grant activity.

Unidentified Speaker 1 described capital and program highlights: the Wilton Prairie Trail (funded by Orion Renewable Resources), a new hire (Amanda Stallman) supporting education and fieldwork, a disc-golf course at Eden Park, and plans to renovate bathroom facilities at Virginia Grove. The board estimated it reached roughly 1,300 unique K—ndash;6 students (each at least twice during the year) and reported about 5,000 nonunique school-program attendees. Camping statistics included 1,960 camper use days with revenue estimates roughly $12,000 at Snively and $5,200 at Virginia Grove.

Grant and funding details were called out in the report: roughly $30,000 in grants broken down in the presentation as approximately $9,000 from Wilson, $1,000 from ICAP, $3,300 from the Community Foundations of the county, $1,600 from another community foundation, $3,000 from the Schloots Foundation, and $835 from the Columbus United Fund. The board also reported pursuit of additional natural-resource conservation work, timber-stand improvements, pond management and bank stabilization work.

One project highlighted was a fish-habitat aeration system at Virginia Grove. Unidentified Speaker 1 said the system will be solar-powered because grid power is not available at the site, and that bank stabilization and restocking plans accompany the aeration project; the contractual install deadline is December 2026.

Commissioners did not take formal action on funding changes during the meeting; the report was accepted as presented.
