Lincoln County commissioners vote to withdraw from Lake Norman Marine Commission effective June 30, 2025

John Johnson, acting chairman of the Lake Norman Marine Commission, warned commissioners that "if you all vote to leave the Marine Commission tonight, tomorrow we will begin dissolving the Marine Commission," and outlined statutory consequences under the 1969 act, including distribution of commission property and dissolution procedures.
Public speakers were split. Several residents and longtime marine commissioners — including Bruce Onsager and Bob Watson — reported local problems they want addressed (permanently moored boats, navigation-aid maintenance and invasive-species response). Bruce Onsager presented photos showing increasingly permanent, unregulated moorings and said the commission had not been responsive on anchoring and mooring issues. Other speakers, including Jeff Tart and former and current elected officials, said existing session law is outdated and that an intercounty legislative effort is underway to replace it with clearer statutory authority.
Commission discussion focused on enforcement continuity, navigation aids, rental-boat regulation and how law-enforcement jurisdiction would be preserved. A commissioner outlined that the proposed session-law update would give clearer legal authority to the commission's regulations and keep law enforcement’s ability to operate across county jurisdictions.
Commissioner Susina moved "that we remove ourselves from the marine commission," making the withdrawal effective June 30, 2025, as required by statute; the motion passed by voice vote. The board also appointed Martin Oakes to fill a vacancy on the Lake Norman Marine Commission prior to withdrawal. County officials said they will coordinate with state senators and neighboring counties as legislative language to modernize the session law moves through the General Assembly.
