Leslie council adopts policy banning excessive force at nonviolent demonstrations

The City Council of Leslie adopted Resolution 1‑31 on Aug. 4, formally declaring that excessive force by law enforcement against individuals engaged in nonviolent civil rights demonstrations will not be permitted in the city’s jurisdiction.
The resolution states the city will enforce applicable state and local laws protecting lawful assembly and will seek to safeguard rights of demonstrators, onlookers and property owners. Speaker 3 read the resolution noting it was written to meet requirements of the Housing and Community Development Act (as amended) for jurisdictions applying for certain state or federal funds.
Speaker 1 remarked that the policy “protects everybody’s civil rights” and acknowledged local sensitivity to the subject. The council moved to adopt the resolution and approved it by voice vote.
