Board member Mister Chambliss briefed the board on elementary and secondary student activities including a reading challenge, Beta inductions, an elementary book fair with donated free books, sporting achievements and a band showcase.
Mister Chambliss told the Gibson County School Board on Sept. 22 about a slate of student activities and recent achievements across the district.
At the elementary level, MES students are taking part in a reading challenge that asks students to read 20 minutes a day; students who are recognized for going above and beyond are placed on a wall of fame and earn a pizza party. Students also celebrated Grandparents Day with lunch, and the book fair will include one free donated book for each student.
At the middle and high schools, Chambliss reported Beta inducted 80 new members at the middle school and 26 at the high school. Seventh-grader Samantha Holt won a teen talent award at the Miss Golden Circle pageant and will advance to the state competition. MMS softball finished second at the Free Hardman University Invitational Tournament, and the high school girls soccer team achieved the most consecutive wins in program history.
Chambliss also noted a high school senior, Will Johnson, started a MHS Pickleball Club and that junior Jacob Nicholas recorded with an a cappella ensemble that includes participants from around the world. The band hosted the Pete Evans marching showcase on Sept. 6.
"Students got to welcome their grandparents for lunch on Grandparents Day," Chambliss said, summarizing one recent event. The report was informational; the board took no formal action on the items presented.
