Superintendent Dr. Clark recognized student leader Abigail Crowe and multiple parent volunteers through an IKEA partnership, highlighted a TVA-funded drone pilot program aimed at FAA Part 107 readiness, and introduced communications interns and student council fundraising successes ($12,061.16 for Make-A-Wish).
Superintendent Dr. Clark used the meeting to spotlight students, volunteers and new programs across the district.
Dr. Clark introduced Abigail Crowe as the board’s Arlington Community School student representative and outlined her academic and extracurricular record. The board also launched a new partnership with IKEA to recognize monthly parent volunteers; recipients included Ed Davis (Arlington Elementary), Melanie Atkins (Donaldson Elementary) and Melanie Nichols (Arlington Middle School), each presented with a $100 IKEA gift card in recognition of their service.
Student Council sponsor Sarah Kelly and student leaders described recent achievements in statewide and regional student government competitions and fundraising. Kelly reported that the student council raised a new high total of $12,061.16 for Make-A-Wish this year.
Dr. Clark described a TVA-sponsored drone pilot grant that placed teachers in a train-the-trainer program; he said the pilot is designed to teach students not only flight skills but maintenance and troubleshooting and “it will put them successfully to pass the FAA Part 107 drone pilot license exam and prepare them for in-demand careers with the TVA.” The superintendent said the district will begin the program at younger grade levels and integrate hands-on technical skills with project-based learning.
The board also heard from communications interns Ethan Barnes and Addison Bradley about their roles creating video and photographic content for schools and events as part of a multi-year internship program to expand work-based learning and communications capacity.
What happens next: The district will continue the pilot, advance internship placements across schools and pursue PTA and legacy grant fundraising for additional LOO interactive playground equipment.
