The Town of Garner announced on Nov. 3 that its planning department accepted the 2025 North Carolina chapter American Planning Association Great Places recognition for public art. Planning director Jeff Tresenberg told council the award — announced at the chapter conference Oct. 15 — celebrates the town's downtown murals, painted crosswalks, utility‑box wraps and a sculpture installation.
Tresenberg credited staff and partners, naming Cassidy Charles and Thomas Roehl for preparing the nomination and citing collaboration with parks and recreation and private developers. A short video submitted with the application was played for council and staff accepted the certificate and posed for a photo with elected officials.
Council members praised the work as an example of intentional placemaking that makes public spaces more attractive and engaging for residents. The council noted the public art committee will continue work on additional designs and that elements such as painted crosswalks have become recognizable features in Garner's downtown.
The town's communications team prepared the nomination materials, Tresenberg said, and the certificate will be displayed in town hall.
