The council approved Bill 2025-17, an ordinance authorizing an intergovernmental mutual-aid agreement between the Neosho Police Department and the Newton County Sheriff's Office.
The chief explained the updated agreement follows the inauguration of a new sheriff and "basically allows us to... pull authority out in the county at the request of the sheriff's office if there's an emergency situation," noting officers are deputized at the sheriff's request. Council members described the measure as routine following a change in the county sheriff and voted to approve the ordinance; the clerk reported a 6-0 vote in favor.
The ordinance authorizes the Neosho Police Chief to execute the agreement on behalf of the city and is expected to take effect immediately upon enactment.
