Committee backs all-way stop near Allendale Elementary, seeks county cooperation on Battle Creek traffic

The Transportation Advisory Committee recommended forwarding a proposal for an all-way stop and enhanced crosswalk markings near Allendale Elementary to address persistent pedestrian activity.
Gerald Bolden described the location and pedestrian patterns and said the proposal includes converting the intersection to an all-way stop with improved signage and markings. "This is actually will be an all way stop...somebody's crossing...the vehicle should see them, wait on them across, and then proceed," Bolden said. Several members described the change as overdue for that corridor.
The committee also discussed traffic backups at Battle Creek High School following the introduction of juniors that increased morning and afternoon traffic. The chair said the municipality has sought participation from the county and the school board and staff reported a meeting scheduled with the county road superintendent to review plans. Public Works staff outlined a proposed addition of a turn lane of roughly 300–400 feet on Malon Moore/Battle Creek Drive slated for future work, but said right-of-way and financing remain open issues that require county cooperation.
Members emphasized the city is willing to partner but that the county owns the relevant roadway segments; staff said they would continue coordination and report back. No formal intergovernmental agreement or funding commitment was adopted at this meeting.
