Committee backs striping and considers guardrails after multiple crash reports

Several members urged the change on safety grounds. “I would think that having the striping is … a more of a safety feature than not having it,” one member said, citing narrow lanes and motorists using the road as a cut‑through. Speaker 2 noted a planned development at Port Royal and Johnlin that carries developer obligations for improvements; staff broke out the $7,000 quote to avoid paying to stripe a section the developer may later tear up.
On guardrails, Speaker 2 said staff had three requests: at Phoenix Metals on Port Royal (after multiple incidents where vehicles crossed the intersection and struck the building), at Port Royal where the existing guardrail near Brandon Woods is short and may not protect vehicles from the creek, and on Denning Lane where a narrow culvert only allows one car at a time. “We did get a…price on adding some additional guardrail to try to block from anybody hitting the building,” Speaker 2 said. Staff said funds are available and that some removed railings (for example from Buckner Road) may be reused elsewhere.
Members asked about signage and agricultural equipment clearance on Denning; Speaker 2 said signage requirements will be part of the installation plan and staff will check widths for farm vehicles. No formal votes were taken; members signaled support for moving forward with stripe installation for the corridor and asked staff to coordinate with planned development work.
