The Policy Committee voted to approve a revised job description for a new creative director of communications and social media. Attorney Matt Upton said the district currently uses an outside consultant for emergency communications but needs an in-house person to "tell the story of the school district" and expand the district's digital presence.
Committee members urged that the job description emphasize creativity and narrative skills ("telling the story of the district") rather than read solely as an operational role. One member suggested changing the title to "creative director of communications and social media," which the committee adopted in edits.
Members also requested the job listing prefer multilingual applicants, convert gendered pronouns to neutral they/them language, and correct typos and formatting. Salary was discussed: one member said the proposed range was too low and recommended $65,000 to $80,000; the attorney said the superintendent's recommended range would be presented to the full board and could be adjusted there.
The committee approved the position as amended (title change, expanded degree language to include communications/public relations/English/marketing, multilingual preferred, and editing changes) and noted that final salary decisions may be revisited during the full-board review.
Next steps: staff will incorporate the suggested edits, finalize the job description, and forward the item to the full board with the committee's recommended language and salary guidance.
