The interim superintendent reported that school buildings opened successfully for the year and that the district welcomed new staff through an induction event.
"So we had our first day of school with students today," the interim superintendent said, noting visits to elementary schools and building-level opening activities. Staff induction on Aug. 26 included 44 staff members who were paired with mentors and toured the city as part of orientation. The superintendent thanked IT Mike Grenier and VA Cleary (staff) for supporting the induction.
The board was told that the Winnesquam Career Center has expanded offerings and will host six Laconia students this year in programs including cosmetology and agriculture. The high school administration is coordinating with families and the district will provide transportation; the superintendent said the SAU will use Hewitt buses for initial transport and contracted SAU courier Jamie Roy will include these trips in his duties. The superintendent emphasized that the enrollment occurred after the budget was set, so the district will need to account for transportation costs going forward.
Why it matters: Student placements at regional career centers and staff induction programs affect students’ educational opportunities and require operational planning, including transportation and potential budget adjustments.
Next steps: Administration will finalize transportation logistics and include related costs in future budget planning.
