On second reads the board moved and approved acceptance of policy IIB, IKFG, IMAH (which adds the wellness committee), IMBD, and adopted IMDA while withdrawing IMDB. The board also approved revisions to JIH. Each motion was moved and seconded on the record and carried with unanimous “Aye” votes.
During first reads the board examined several policies affected by the 03/2006 rule changes. Much of the discussion centered on draft IJ (instructional resources). Members debated language that in the NHSBA draft appeared to assign direct selection responsibilities to the board rather than to district staff or the curriculum committee. Board members sought wording that would make clear the Bedford School District and professionally trained district personnel select instructional resources while the board’s role is oversight. One suggested insertion the board discussed was language mirroring the district’s existing phrasing: instructional materials are selected by “professionally trained and qualified personnel employed by the school district.”
Board members also flagged an italicized list in the draft policy and proposed either striking it or moving specific elements into BSD‑specific language to avoid implying the board must perform duties it does not execute operationally. The group agreed to redraft and return with clarified attributions and wording for consistency across the IJ/policy packet.
Members asked administrators to incorporate selection language from the top of page 3 of the district’s current draft, keep oversight and accountability language, and remove or reassign items that read as operational responsibilities. The board noted one policy status changed from recommended to required and accepted the administrative suggestion to keep district‑specific phrasing for behavior and intervention plans where appropriate.
The board did not adopt the first‑read IJ language at this meeting; further edits will be prepared and the packet will return for future consideration.
