Public works reports rapid progress on stormwater work; sidewalk bids and small parcel follow-up announced

Acting city administrator provided several operations updates to the Board of Aldermen on Friday, including rapid progress on a stormwater project, recent water-leak repairs, a small-parcel follow-up and an upcoming sidewalk procurement.
On the stormwater project the administrator said the work has been constrained by permits for 14 months but that public works completed roughly 70% of the project’s on-site work in four days. "The public works has busted out 70% of the project in 4 days," the administrator said, adding that crack sealing and finishing work are scheduled for November and that staff are coordinating basin upgrades with nearby schools.
The administrator also reported the crew repaired six water leaks in the last nine days and praised public works for the progress. The update included a brief personal note that an employee named Wes is currently in England; no injuries were reported following a minor vehicle incident.
On unfinished business, staff reported the city owns a parcel at 414 East Jackson of about 3,050 square feet purchased roughly 20 years ago; after easements are applied staff estimated less than about 600 square feet remains usable. Staff said they will discuss next steps with staff member Holly after the meeting.
For the Jackson Street sidewalk project, the administrator said six companies had pulled bid packets and bids will open Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Staff said incentives could encourage contractors to complete work by Dec. 1.
Next steps: staff will continue project work on stormwater, follow up with records for the East Jackson parcel and proceed with bid opening for the Jackson Street sidewalk project.
