Early-year enrollment down year-over-year but slightly above budget forecast

Spencer Windward presented an early snapshot of enrollment on Sept. 9, reporting 6,896 students districtwide as of the first week of school. That figure is about 130 students fewer than the district had at the same point last year but 12 students higher than the number used in the district’s May budget projections.
"So at our per-pupil amount of $10,119, that 12 extra students would result in a $121,000 of budget money that we did not anticipate in our May budget," Windward said. He cautioned that enrollment will fluctuate throughout the year and that staff will monitor trends before making staffing adjustments.
Windward reviewed grade‑by‑grade and school‑level differences, noting the Empire campus is down about 44 students. He said the district will analyze whether class sizes and staffing levels should be adjusted, favoring attrition rather than immediate layoffs.
Board members asked follow-up questions about pre-K funding calculations and how future housing developments might affect enrollment yield. Trustees also asked for a future budget update so the board can review revenue and expense implications as the year progresses.
The presentation was informational; trustees asked staff to return with more detailed budget materials in coming months.
