City economic development staff and consultants briefed the Alexandria City Council on findings from the May Economic Summit and a proposed five-year strategic framework to guide economic development.
Stephanie Landrum of the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership and consultant Tracy McDaniel described stakeholder engagement that included more than 75 interviews/roundtables, over 530 survey responses, and roughly 200 summit participants. The proposed framework emphasizes place-based development that preserves historic character, improved connectivity and mobility, stronger amenities and entertainment venues, targeted industry recruitment (aerospace, defense, AI, life sciences), support for entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystems, and workforce partnerships tied to institutions such as Virginia Tech.
Councilmembers sought clarity on the five-year horizon, asked for more granular specificity and locations for targeted investments, and recommended public dashboards and regular check-ins. Tracy McDaniel said the team will deliver recommendations and an implementation plan, and staff described plans for a Tableau dashboard to surface key indicators and align metrics with goals.
Council discussed balancing short-term, visible wins against longer-term work, aligning a forthcoming real-estate assessment and partner roles, and the possibility of periodic public reporting or quarterly check-ins on progress. No formal policy vote was taken; staff will refine implementation details over July and August and return with recommendations in the fall.
