Poquoson council approves fleet purchase, advances sidewalk design and postpones solicitor-code changes

The Poquoson City Council handled a series of administrative and capital items during the regular meeting.
Public Works: The council authorized the purchase of a TL‑3 "lightning loader" debris truck from Infrastructure Solutions Group for $220,039.44 using VDOT roadway/drainage funds. Public Works Director John Anderson said the acquisition would replace aging fleet units, support bulk debris pickup and reduce breakdown risk; the motion passed on a 7–0 vote.
Sidewalk project: City Engineer Sean Crawford updated council on the Little Florida Road sidewalk between CVS and Galen Drive. Staff secured an easement from one homeowner and continue to negotiate with another; council gave consensus to proceed with early engineering and design (option 2) while continuing outreach to the remaining property owner.
Solicitors/peddlers ordinance: Commissioner of Revenue Joe Caccamillo recommended limiting for‑profit solicitation hours to 9 a.m.–5 p.m., excluding Sundays and federal holidays, and requiring solicitors to carry permits on their person. Council asked staff to clarify exemptions for nonprofit, religious or civic canvassing and to consider visible‑permit requirements; council postponed action to the Aug. 11 meeting to refine language (motion carried 7–0).
Other items: Council approved a school board appointment standard operating procedure to treat interim appointments like full appointments and to interview all qualified applicants. Mary Sandy was appointed to the Virginia Peninsula Community College Board for a term expiring June 30, 2029. The council also proclaimed National Night Out for Aug. 5 and received administrative updates from the clerk and city manager.
