Brooklyn Park council authorizes yearlong insurance contract after staff says workers’ comp rates fell

Brooklyn Park’s City Council unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the city manager or finance director to enter a contract with the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust after staff reported sizable savings on workers’ compensation.
City employment attorney Mike Presque told the council the city’s existing coverage expires Aug. 31, 2025, and that updated workers’ compensation rates had “come back at a significant decrease,” estimating “we can save approximately a $100,000 a month.” Presque said the city was still waiting for an updated liability quote and that Travelers was expected to respond in the coming weeks.
Council member Konaske made the motion to waive the reading and adopt Resolution 2025; Council member Garvin seconded. The clerk called roll and the vote was 7–0 to approve the resolution.
City staff said the contract being authorized would cover Sept. 1, 2025, through Aug. 31, 2026, and that the city could later terminate the arrangement if an alternate liability proposal from Travelers proved more favorable. The council’s action grants authority to the city manager or finance director to finalize the agreement.
Next steps: staff will return any final liability quotes and proceed with contract execution under the newly authorized authority; no other council action was required at the meeting.
