Canton Local board denies Sunday open mats for wrestler, endorses drafting written Sunday-activity policy

The Canton Local Board of Education on Tuesday debated whether to allow three Sunday wrestling open-mat sessions for a student preparing for a national tournament and ultimately voted to deny the immediate exception.

Board members spent the bulk of the special meeting weighing two questions: whether the district has—and should keep—an informal, often case-by-case practice around Sunday activities, and whether this particular request rose to the level of an "extenuating circumstance" that would warrant bending that practice. "We don't have board policy on this particular" issue, a board member said during the meeting, noting past approvals were handled by exception.

Supporters of the single-athlete request argued the wrestler's participation in a national-level event required specific mat time and that a limited exception would be appropriate. "This is a national tournament," one supporter said, calling the request a special circumstance. Opponents said approving one coach's Sunday practice would create precedent and administrative inconsistency, and urged coaches to coordinate schedules and find alternative weekday preparation. "If we allow one coach to do it, we have to apply it to every coach," a board member said.

After more than an hour of discussion about fairness, student welfare and scheduling, the board held a roll-call vote on the request for Sunday open mats on Sept. 28, Oct. 5 and Oct. 12. The roll call recorded No votes from multiple members and a single Aye from Mister Kwasi, producing a failed motion (recorded tally: Aye 1, No 3). The meeting transcript records votes voiced as: "No" from several members, "Aye" from Mister Kwasi, and "No" from Dr. Noell.

Board members also agreed on next steps to remove ambiguity in future requests: draft language to place in the student handbook or as a district policy that clarifies the purpose, scope and criteria for Sunday activities; circulate the draft for board review; vote at a subsequent meeting; and then notify parents of the clarified policy and implementation timeline. "Maybe we can draft it before our next meeting, vote on it at the next meeting, share it out after that so everybody knows it," one member said.

The district did not reference any specific statute or formal ordinance during the discussion. The vote concludes the board's consideration of this particular request; board members indicated the policy-drafting process will continue and be scheduled for a future meeting.
