Council authorizes solicitation of bids to fix West Street drainage

The council approved a motion to solicit bids for a drainage repair project on West Street after the mayor described recurring flooding in the Meadowbrook subdivision that prevents residents from accessing homes during heavy rain.
The mayor explained that developers installed culverts under West Street but the downstream ditch is overgrown and the city needs to clear and extend it so storm water can flow properly. He said about 400 feet of ditch from the culvert to Chicago Street must be cleared, and the engineer suggested an additional roughly 1,000 feet on the other side of Chicago Street to complete the outfall.
"When it rains, the street floods," the mayor said, noting the subdivision was constructed around 2011–2012 with drainage that has not been completed by the city. The mayor said staff estimated the work could be done within 60 days if bids are solicited and approved.
Councilmember Miller moved to solicit bids; the motion carried on roll call (motion passed). The mayor and staff will bring back recommended bids and cost estimates for council approval before any contract is executed.
