Pflugerville commission approves 'Daydreams in Bloom' mural and community paint day

The Pflugerville Parks & Recreation Commission voted Aug. 21 to approve 'Daydreams in Bloom,' a second-phase mural to be installed along the Gillen Creek West Trail at Grand Avenue Parkway.

Staff said the city prepped the embankment wall last year and the new panel will be about 11 feet high and roughly 50 feet long. The mural team — including artist Cindy Tobar, who spoke to the commission — described the concept as "a visual poem of color and light" that depicts a child's quiet gaze, a hummingbird and unfolding petals.

Tobar told commissioners the project will include a community paint day in which volunteers will apply base layers; the artist team will return later to add shading and detail. Staff said a tentative date for the community paint day is Nov. 8, with a rain backup date to be scheduled.

Commissioners discussed logistics including parking near Windermere or Black Locust and how the new panel will blend with the adjacent 'Flight of the Pollinator Plains' installation. A commissioner moved to approve the project and another seconded; the motion was approved by voice vote and the chair declared the motion carried.

The commission asked staff to help recruit volunteers and to provide promotional space for the paint-day outreach. The artists said they plan to display examples of the sections volunteers will paint at the event so participants can see the final design before they take part.

Next steps: staff will proceed with permitting and event planning and confirm the paint-day schedule and volunteer sign-up procedures.
