Creve Coeur council votes 6–1 to remove deteriorating Lake Schoolhouse after structural concerns

Councilors voted to remove the City-owned Lake Schoolhouse after staff reported a newly widened crack in a primary basement beam and a structural engineer indicated replacement would be required. The decision followed public comment, a council tour of the building and extended debate about preservation, fundraising and ongoing maintenance capacity.

Jason Valvero told the council that a structural engineer's recent inspection found the beam condition had worsened since an earlier review and that replacing the beam would require lifting only the center portion to relieve pressure. Valvero and engineering consultants said replacement is feasible but would add substantial cost. Council members and residents questioned long-term maintenance, the city's capacity to staff programming and the relative value of converting the site to a playground or other park uses.

A resident who spoke during public comment urged the council to pursue fundraising and preserve the schoolhouse as an important local historic resource; other council members described constituent feedback favoring a playground and cited limited city funds and staffing. Several council members said modest interim repairs (gutters/downspouts) would slow deterioration if the council sought more time for fundraising.

Council member motioned to proceed with removal of the building and salvage historically valuable contents; the motion was seconded. The recorded vote was 6 in favor, 1 opposed. Staff said the city will inventory and remove historical contents and coordinate with parks committees about artifacts and archival materials before demolition or removal work proceeds.
