Council authorizes managed deer hunt on city property; 31 hunters to participate

The Warrensburg City Council voted to authorize a managed deer hunt on city property for the 2025 deer season and into part of 2026. Parks and Recreation Director Chris Diehl told the council this is the program's fourth year and that 31 hunters will be selected by random drawing for designated areas on city park and property locations.
Diehl said mandatory pre-hunt orientations will explain rules and reporting requirements and that Missouri Department of Conservation representatives will attend the orientation. City staff noted past difficulty getting hunters to report harvest numbers and said hunters who fail to report would be ineligible for the next year's draw as an incentive to improve reporting.
Councilmember Jan Jones recommended and the council agreed to amend the resolution to reference hunter safety requirements as required by Missouri Department of Conservation; after amendment the council adopted the resolution by recorded vote. Diehl said previous seasons averaged about 16 deer harvested through the program and that maps and posted signage will identify permitted areas.
The resolution authorizes staff to proceed with the program, require proof of hunter education where applicable under state rules and to coordinate with Missouri conservation officials on reporting.
