Raytown approves budget amendment to add four patrol officers after spike in enforcement activity

The Raytown Board of Aldermen on Aug. 12 approved an amendment to the FY24–25 budget to fund four additional full‑time patrol officers, citing steep increases in enforcement metrics so far this year.

Captain Jared Rogers, patrol commander for the Raytown Police Department, told the board the department is fully staffed at 41 officers and asked the city to add four more patrol positions "to strike while the iron's hot." He said vehicle stops in the first half of 2025 are up 132%, DWI arrests are up 229%, overall arrests are up 77% and citations have risen 106% compared with the same period last year. "The numbers aren't just statistics, and they represent a proactive police force taking dangerous drivers and individuals off our streets," Rogers said.

Board members pressed staff on budget mechanics and expected effects. One alderman asked whether adding officers would reduce overtime spending; Rogers suggested the question was better directed to the chief. Another asked how the requested line‑item movement (noted in the packet as $75,993) would cover four hires with fewer than four months left in the fiscal year; staff clarified the figure is for the current budget period and that the hires would be assigned to patrol once trained or as lateral transfers became available.

Aldermen praised recent officer activity and voter support for public safety measures. The motion to amend the budget passed on a roll call vote with unanimous approval.
