Garner council reviews development map, Meadowbrook Park grant plans and moves to closed session

The Garner Town Council on Oct. 30 received a series of administrative updates and voted to go into closed session to discuss property acquisition and potential personnel matters.
Town planning staff reported one new development added to the town’s activity map: a site plan for the Latino Community Credit Union at Old Stage Road and Highway 401, with access coordinated with NCDOT. Staff also told council they will ask for a resolution at the Nov. 3 meeting to apply for Wake/Raleigh hospitality tax funds for phase one of Meadowbrook Park, and that a consent‑agenda item will include a budget amendment to add an additional attorney in the legal services office.
Town management reported on recent professional activity: staff and assistant managers attended the ICMA annual conference in Tampa and staff highlighted sessions on artificial intelligence, strategic planning and public‑safety wellness. Staff also said the planning department’s “coffee with a planner” event was well attended and reminded residents of Trick‑or‑Treat the Trail at White Deer Park.
In council reports, members urged residents to vote in the upcoming election, praised town staff, and noted that Duke Energy removed several hazardous old utility poles on West Garner Road after repeated requests from town staff. Council members also gave updates on Veterans Day planning and a ribbon cutting for an accessible new home in the community.
Toward the end of the meeting, Town Attorney Terry Jones requested a closed session under North Carolina General Statutes §143‑318.11(a)(5) to instruct staff regarding property acquisition and, if necessary, §143‑318.11(a)(6) to discuss personnel qualifications for an agenda item on Nov. 3. Council member Singleton moved to enter closed session with a second from Council member Matthews; council voted by voice and moved into closed session. Staff said they would return with a report after the closed session. No substantive public actions were taken during open session on these items.
