Board moves on landfill repairs, drainage fixes and bridge inspections; approves $17,000 transfer for transfer-station paving

At the Tazewell County Board of Supervisors meeting on Aug. 5, county public-works staff reported a series of infrastructure needs that range from transfer-station paving to multi-road drainage projects and aging bridges.
Public-works presenter (identified in the meeting as Mr. Dunford) said an internal estimate to repave potholes at the Boswellian transfer station came in at about $17,000. "We estimate that it's gonna be around $17,000 to do that paving," he said. Board members moved to transfer $17,000 from the Northern District Capital Improvement Fund to cover the paving; the motion carried.
Dunford also described a more complex drainage problem on Sparrow Road. An earlier rough estimate of $30,000 rose to roughly $97,000 after staff found multiple roads that drain to a single outlet. He advised starting repairs at the bottom of the drainage system so water has somewhere to go; he estimated 10–15 homes could be affected by the issue.
The board discussed use of coal severance funds and contingency to address multiple drainage and paving needs countywide, and asked staff to return in September with a prioritized list and phasing options.
On bridges, county staff said three bridges require annual inspection (Mountain Road, Fincastle Farms, Sage Hill). The Sage Hill bridge received the worst condition rating; staff emphasized it is on a private road, noted that property owners have been notified, and said replacement now could exceed $750,000 if the county were to accept responsibility and act without outside grant support.
Other infrastructure items included authorization to surplus older IT equipment for auction and a reported sinkhole repair at the county airport with a low bid of $22,630. Board members asked staff to explore Department of Aviation grant opportunities to offset airport repair costs.
The board recorded these votes and directed staff to provide contractor quotes, updated capital balances and a phased plan for drainage and road work at the next meeting.
