Smyth County approves participation in multi-party opioid settlement with group of eight manufacturers

Smyth County supervisors voted Sept. 11 to accept a proposed allocation of proceeds from opioid litigation involving a group of eight secondary manufacturers and authorized the county attorney or opioid counsel to execute necessary settlement documents.
County counsel described the settlement as smaller than a previous, larger settlement the county addressed in July but said proceeds would be allocated among participating localities consistent with the lawyers’ distribution formula. The county’s resolution (provided to supervisors at the meeting) would accept the settlement and authorize the county attorney (opioid counsel) to execute documents needed to finalize participation.
The board moved, seconded and unanimously approved the resolution to accept the settlement and to authorize execution of settlement documents by county counsel.
Board members and staff did not provide a detailed distribution schedule in the meeting; staff said any allocation and administration details would follow the settlement mechanics and be coordinated through counsel and the opioid authority.
