Council approves insurance‑funded replacement for East Side Playground after arson

Senior recreation manager Jerome told the council neighbors reported 15‑foot flames at the playground. The League of Minnesota Cities and playground vendor St. Croix Recreation assessed the damage and provided replacement options. Jerome said the vendor’s revised quote for the replacement equipment, at a negotiated discount, is $127,530. Due to the city’s $100,000 per‑occurrence deductible and aggregate limits, insurance will cover approximately $111,437; the city would be responsible for the deductible and maintenance fees described in the packet.
Councilmember Robertson moved and Councilmember Miss Solia seconded the motion to accept insurance funds and proceed with replacement; the motion carried by voice vote. Jerome said staff will provide color options to the neighborhood for selection and aims to restore equipment before winter.
Next steps: staff to coordinate procurement and neighborhood input on colors and schedule installation subject to vendor and insurance timelines.
