Maplewood approves 125‑foot Verizon monopole at Sterling Street South
Summary
The council approved a conditional-use permit and design review for a 125-foot communications monopole at 1210 Sterling Street South after the applicant reduced height from an earlier 195‑foot proposal; the site is owned by the St. Paul Educational Foundation and has hosted wireless equipment since 1997.

The Maplewood City Council approved two measures May 12 to allow Verizon to build a 125‑foot communications monopole at 1210 Sterling Street South.
Ms. Parr summarized the application, noting the site (owned by the St. Paul Educational Foundation and currently home to a ski‑jump structure) has housed wireless equipment since 1997 but the ski‑jump can no longer support upgraded hardware. The applicant reduced the proposed tower height from 195 feet to 125 feet to fit the city’s ordinance and to limit visual impact, Ms. Parr said.
Tammy Hartman, speaking for Verizon, said the location is important to maintain continuous coverage because towers function as a chain of handoffs between carriers. “The ski jump can no longer, is structurally sound for any upgrades,” Hartman said, and Verizon needs a structurally sound monopole to host equipment for multiple carriers.
Council Member Lee moved and Council Member Ginneman seconded the conditional‑use permit resolution for a 125‑foot tower; the motion carried on a voice vote. Council subsequently approved the design‑review resolution (motion moved by Council Member Juneman, seconded by Council Member Cave), also by voice vote.
Ms. Parr noted conditions in the council packet that include tree and screening requirements; if significant trees are impacted the applicant must meet replacement and screening conditions. The council’s approvals allow the project to move forward subject to those conditions and any required permits.
