Maplewood swears in six new firefighters at June council meeting

Mayor Abrams opened the June 9 Maplewood City Council meeting by calling forward members of the Maplewood Fire Department for a badge-pinning and swearing-in ceremony.
Fire Chief Mondor introduced Tyler Orlando, Seth Miller, Ryan Haying, Wendy Manca, Emma Johnson and Diedrich Payne and described their backgrounds and training. "Tonight, we formally swear in members of the Maplewood Fire Department family," Mondor said, noting family members who would pin the badges.
The ceremony included a public recital of the oath to uphold the U.S. and Minnesota constitutions, city ordinances and department policies. The chief highlighted the department’s community outreach work, including a recent bike rodeo that drew more than 650 attendees and led to plaques of appreciation from the Hmong Alliance Church.
Family members joined the new firefighters at the dais for individual pinning and photographs. Mayor Abrams thanked department staff and noted the event aimed to recognize both the new personnel and the department’s broader public engagement.
The council proceeded to the rest of its agenda after the ceremony.
